Meet Carey

Leadership

Family

Carey and her husband Derek have been married for 17 years and are the proud parents of two boys, ages 13 and 15.  Carey grew up in Indianapolis and Derek grew up in Frankfort, Indiana.  Carey attended Washington Township schools until 5th grade and moved to Pike Township where she graduated from Pike H.S. in 1989.

In her two years in office, Carey has proven to be an effective bi-partisan Statehouse leader.  She is fiscally responsible, pragmatic and works hard for the people of House District 87.

As our State Representative, Carey has:

  • Worked across the aisle on policies that improve quality of life and strengthen our neighborhoods
  • Supported our public schools and new pathways for postsecondary education/career training
  • Voted against powerful special interests
  • Ensured that tax dollars are spent in a fiscally responsible manner

In addition, Carey has authored & co-authored several important bills that have become law.  These new laws:

  • Strengthen protections for domestic violence victims
  • Enhance property rights while encouraging the growth of bike and pedestrian trail across Indiana, and
  • Create the Indiana Water Infrastructure Taskforce to address Indiana’s water infrastructure needs.

2008-2018
Executive Director, Indiana Recycling Coalition. Carey more than tripled the organization's budget, which allowed the IRC to grow its staff and better serve its mission.
In 2009, Carey led the IRC's statehouse legislative campaign that culminated in the passage of Indiana’s electronics recycling law.

Under Carey's leadership the IRC brought together an industry stakeholder group which sought to find common ground to advance recycling in Indiana. This IRC-led industry coalition effectively lobbied for new recycling funding and policies during the 2013 and 2014 legislative sessions.
